Reflection on the Past, Present and Future of Analytical and Quantitative Cytology and Histology

Analytical and Quantitative Cytology and Histology (AQCH), whose 2007 Impact Factor is 2.940, has a long history of publishing leading research in cell biology, pathology and oncology based on analytical and quantitative methods.
Table I categorizes the articles published by AQCH by general topic for the years 2006–2007.1-100 Image analysis, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, advanced statistics, human tumor pathology and oncology, related in particular to urinary system and male genital organs, continue to be significant components of articles published over these years. AQCH has also become the publication venue of studies describing new molecular and genetic findings of human cancers and of studies demonstrating advances in risk assessment, detection, diagnosis and prognostic indications.

AQCH owes its scientific position to the publication of those research reports that are definitive in their outcomes and represent a pivotal position within our goal for knowledge and understanding. This places an implicit obligation on the reviewers and the Editorial Board to be robust and cogent in their consideration of which articles should be published. Most researchers are passionate about their science, and peer review can be a gruelling process. However, it is only through rigorous review by other experts in the field that we can have confidence in what is published. The next time a reviewer asks for that extra experiment to be performed or data to be gathered prior to publication, please embrace the opportunity to strengthen your paper and other researchers’ perception of it rather than consider it an encumbrance.
The fundamental principle of publishing definitive studies of the highest quality with a pivotal impact in the area will remain the goal of AQCH. Like most things in life, evolution and development will be required if AQCH is to maintain its position within the literature of cell biology, pathology and oncology. We hope that researchers and readers will feel a sense of common ownership of AQCH in the course of their activities as both authors and reviewers. We will always be pleased to receive suggestions and comments for AQCH as we move forward in our quest for scientific knowledge and understanding.
