Cytogenetic Risk and Hemocyte Account for the Age-Related Poor Prognosis in Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients

  Objective: The prognostic indictors of age-related poor outcomes in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are still controversial. The aim of this work was to provide comprehensive insights into the effect of different hemocytes and to investigate the association between age and clinical features in adult patients with AML.
Study Design:
A retrospective study was performed to determine the role of age in the therapeutic outcomes of AML. A total of 166 newly diagnosed adult patients’ data from January 2015 to November 2019 in Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University were collected and analyzed.
Older patients presented a poorer prognosis (p=0.001) with shorter overall survival, which is served as age-related outcomes. Binary logistic regression demonstrated that cytogenetic risk (OR=4.508, 95% CI 2.733–7.435), leukocyte (OR=7.410, 95% CI 1.139–5.910), and bone marrow blast cells (OR=3.261, 95% CI 1.075–5.615) were independent indictors for age-related prognosis. In addition, Kaplan-Meier curve also revealed that the above factors were associated with overall survival (all p values <0.001).
Cytogenetic risk, leukocyte, and bone marrow blast cells are dominant factors which account for the age-related poor outcomes and shorter overall survival in AML.
